Island Hopping by Bike: Cycling the Saronic Islands of Ελλάδα (Greece)
A week of cycling and island hopping through the Saronic Islands — Aegina, Methana, Spetses, Hydra, and Poros — reveals some of the most rewarding cycling in Greece.
Travelers stay aboard the Thalassa, an elegant wooden sailing ship with comfortable cabins and generous deck space. Evenings unfold with hearty Greek meals, laughter, music and dancing on deck.
From the first spin of the pedals, the journey feels like pure joy. Quiet island roads wind through pine forests and along sparkling coastlines, with hardly a car in sight. Steady climbs become effortless on e-bikes, and long, flowing descents open to sweeping sea views that seem to go on forever.
The scenery is everything one imagines when dreaming of Greece: blue-on-blue horizons, sunlit harbours, and hills dotted with olive and pine trees. Dry, rocky landscapes are framed by ancient stone walls, centuries old olive groves, and pistachio trees growing on Aegina terraces. Traditional fishing boats still bob in harbours beside seaside tavernas, where cats linger dockside, waiting for a handout. Everywhere, there’s a sense of timelessness — knowing that people have lived and thrived here for millennia.
Autumn brings ideal cycling weather — cool mornings and bright sunshine. Villages are peaceful at the close of the tourist season, cafés still open, locals unhurried. Between rides, it’s hard to resist a swim in the turquoise Aegean; the water remains surprisingly warm, clear, and inviting.
