Lopez Island is the flattest of all the San Juan Islands = a great place to ride with kids. There are many routes to discover. Here are two we have enjoyed:...
You can feel miles from the city in Vancouver’s Southlands neighbourhood, a rural area near UBC and the Musqueam Nation. Starting from Pacific Spirit Park, explore wooded trails, visit the Musqueam Cultural Centre, and pass by the Southlands Riding Club. You’ll ride the Fraser River Trail, a section of the Canyon to Coast Trail. There is art and signage along the route telling the history of this former industrial area. Originally built as a horse trail by local equestrians ― yield to horses and riders along the trail.
She’ll Be Coming ‘Round the Mountain on this ride! Loop around Burnaby Mountain ― hills, crunchy trails and a bit of Wahoo! singletrack. For the full route, start from Port Moody and climb up through the hills of Glenayre; or shorten the ride by starting at Burquitlam Skytrain and ending at Moody Centre Station. A fun and rollicking ride!
Ladner is a cyclist’s dream ... flat ... scenic ... and fun! Visit the quaint town of Ladner, then explore many trails — Brunswick Point, Great Blue Heron Way, through Tsawwassen and Beach Grove then onto Boundary Bay Trail. Return via 64th street back — what a loop!
For a great city ride through New Westminster, Burnaby and Vancouver, take the BC Parkway. The mostly flat route follows the Skytrain most of the way. It’s 18km long from the Fraser River to Trout Lake. I start at 22nd Station, have lunch on Commercial Drive and take the train back. For a longer loop, connect with Central Valley Greenway.
Sometimes there’s the perfect ride — this is one of my favourites — the river and valley views are spectacular. The route follows the The Great Trail through farm fields along the Fraser River to Fort Langley. For a shorter ride start at Derby Reach Park, explore the quaint town of Fort Langley and enjoy lunch or an ice-cream! Add on a visit to Brae Island Park or visit the 1827 Historic Fort.
A favourite and easy ride — from art sculptures to boats, an old fishing village with many shops and restaurants, three museums, a boardwalk, wildlife — this ride has it all.
When you’re ready to explore a bit of singletrack and some trails south of the border, try the Bellingham Interurban Trail. The trailhead starts just south of Fairhaven along an old...
